IELTS Speaking Part 1: Watches

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Watches

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Do you wear a watch?

Answer 1:

I do from time to time. Smartwatches have become popular recently, and I see them as a modern gadget for our hands. They look elegant, and I can change the skin on their display, so that makes them a very cool and handy tool for telling the time, as well as playing around a bit.

My Personal Answer:

Right now, no. I do appreciate the look of a nice, stylish watch on my hand, however as I carry my mobile phone all the time everywhere I go, I see little reason to have a watch. In a sense, the smartphone has completely replaced the need for a watch, as I can click any moment and see the time exactly there. In fact, it takes me some time to read a traditional hand watch, as I'm so used to the digital one on my phone.

Have you ever got a watch as a gift?

Answer 1:

Answer for "No".

Not really. I've never received one, because... I think I never needed one at all. When I was growing up, we were not allowed to wear any jewelry or accessories at school, and once I left school, I already had a smartphone with me, so I never had the need for a watch. That's why my family never gave me one.

My Personal Answer:

I did. I received an expensive Italian watch as a gift when I was 12 or 13, I don't remember exactly. I received it from my grandparents. The reason was that my grandparents wanted me to have a memorable gift from them, as I couldn't see them that often, and they wanted to build a great memory for me. And so it worked, now, even though I don't wear it, for the time being, the watch is near and dear to me, as it reminds me of my grandparent's love and appreciation.

Why do some people wear expensive watches?

Answer 1:

Well, I think many wear them similarly to jewelry or expensive handbags. It is a way to show off their wealth and their style. Because of social media and constant exposure, many people try to show off their perfect lifestyles. They will buy expensive luxury items and will show them off to the world, with the hope they receive a lot of attention in the form of likes, shares, and comments. This is a way people socialize these days.

My Personal Answer:

It may be due to different reasons. In general, it is a status symbol and it shows style, sophistication, and matureness. Wearing a luxury watch is especially common in different business industries where in order to be taken seriously, you have to wear the right attire as an entry into that industry. Think lawyers, businessmen, consultants, and so on.

Do you think it is important to wear a watch?

Answer 1:

I'm not really sure. I suppose it is a personal choice, sort of like when people decide if they should wear a hat or a fancy jacket. I don't think it has to be a requirement, as it's your own choice if you want to wear some pieces of accessories or not.

My Personal Answer:

Well, as I mentioned earlier, it does show respect towards a certain industry. People are expected to wear a style in order to fit with the industry's image. Of course, over time, an image may shift and change, and then it won't be necessary to follow the rule strictly, but wearing a watch is still quite important for a banker or a manager of a big accounting firm, and so it is somewhat necessary for them to do so.

Do watches have style?

Answer 1:

As with every other accessory, yes of course they do. There are some companies that come to my mind like Swatch or Casio that are forever classics, and from time to time they even change their style, partnering with a pop culture hit like Marvel or Hello Kitty and designing some of these younger, fresher watches for a younger audience. That means that with time, watches follow trends and try to appeal to different generations of clients.

My Personal Answer:

In my personal opinion, watches are a complete scam. Here is why I think so. Many of the top brands say Tudor, Omega, Cartier, Longines, and even the king of them all Rolex, look absolutely, without any shred of a doubt the same. It's like all of them were produced in the same factory and then given a different logo, stamped on top of them and different prices set completely randomly. Everything is exactly the same, the materials, the aesthetics, the digits, the arrows, absolutely the same. Maybe this is me being cynical, but none of these are worth the thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars they ask for.

What is the difference between traditional watches and smart watches?

Answer 1:

All the functions, of course. On a smartwatch, we can read text messages, change the skin, switch from a traditional look to a digital one, measure our vitals like pulse or blood pressure, send a voice message, and so on. There are so many options we can access from a smartwatch, and the traditional one is just a timepiece

My Personal Answer:

Well, I guess one is replacing the other. Slowly but surely a large majority of people would wear a smartwatch instead of a traditional one. I've even met younger people these days that do not know how to read quickly a traditional watch with arrows, as they are so used to a digital clock. Smartwatches will become a necessary accessory in the future, as they would be able to tell us important health information, and that will be critical for anyone who is concerned about his health.
