IELTS Speaking Part 1: Traveling

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Do you like traveling?

Answer 1:

Yes, of course. I mean who doesn't? Traveling makes me feel free, relaxed, and curious about discovering new things from around the world. I'm really interested in food, culture, and interesting activities I could do while traveling.

My Personal Answer:

I've done a lot of traveling in my life so for a while, I was not the biggest fan. I really appreciate and enjoy a single place, sort of settling down and growing roots. I definitely like to see some new cities or countries, but not as often as most people do. For me, going somewhere once a year or even less is perfectly fine.

How often do you go traveling?

Answer 1:

As a student:

Not that often. I am still a student and I'm still preoccupied with lessons and learning. My parents don't have so much time to take me traveling either, and so we haven't been abroad so much. When we have some time, usually during vacations, we travel internally in my country.

My Personal Answer:

Well, as I've lived abroad for over 15 years, I've been traveling quite a lot. When I was a college student, we used to travel more locally, but as a European, that meant that very often we traveled between countries. Now, I live and work in China, but I travel every year back to see my family and friends, and on top of that, I visit some other countries on the way. So you might say I travel a lot.

What destinations do you prefer to travel to?

Answer 1:

I enjoy visiting big cities and exploring their wonderful architecture and rich lifestyle. For me, there is nothing better than walking around a well-designed park, visiting exciting museums, or trying some of their street food and restaurants. This type of traveling makes me really happy.

My Personal Answer:

I am a nature and history lover and I got that from my mom. For me, the best type of trip is somewhere near a natural wonder or exploring some ancient temples. Countries like Mexico, Thailand, Cambodia, and China attract me the most as there you can see the marvelous beauty of nature and the fascinating architectural achievements of ancient civilizations

My Personal Answer:

How do you feel when you are traveling?

Answer 1:

I feel free. When I'm traveling I often forget about my worries or problems at home and I focus on the journey. It is a great way to release some pressure and walk around without having responsibilities or restrictions

My Personal Answer:

For me, it's probably a little different from the rest, as when I travel I feel anxious and stressed. That's right, I'm always worried about small things like not missing my flights, arriving at a destination on time, not getting lost, not losing money or my passports, and so on. I tend to overthink and that causes me a ton of anxiety. I do enjoy my journeys but I always have those other thoughts on the back of my head.

What are the benefits of traveling?

Answer 1:

Well, I've already mentioned before but one of the benefits is the relaxation and peace of mind that traveling brings. Another one is definitely learning about how other people live and the cultural exchange we do while traveling. We can learn a lot from the world so every place is worth a visit.

My Personal Answer:

We can learn a lot about life from observing people's different cultures, customs, traditions, and general ways of living. The world and individual nations have a rich and diverse history and traditions spanning thousands of years, and every time we experience each, we get more culturally enriched. Is that important? Well for many this is the meaning of life, absorbing and enriching themselves throughout their lives.

Is traveling good for the environment?

Answer 1:

Well, as long as people take care of their surroundings and keep their personal trash at a minimum, then traveling can be an acceptable way to enjoy our time. We need to be more environmentally conscious when picking our destinations and how often we travel, that's for sure

My Personal Answer:

Unfortunately, at the moment and with our current technology and fossil fuels use, it is absolutely not. No matter what type of transportation we use - a car, a bus, a train, or especially a plane, mass tourism is extremely detrimental to our Earth and its environment. Some people these days are opting out and taking more eco-friendly types of tourism and that is helpful, however, the vast majority of people still use the most convenient form of travel - air travel - and that creates a huge amount of environmental air pollution.
