IELTS Speaking Part 1: Time Management

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

How do you plan your time in a day?

Answer 1:

I sort of go with the flow. I don't bother so much with making plans or schedules, and so I would wake up, do some chores at home and then continue with my work for the day. I think there is no need to stress out about my day or my tasks. I have a peaceful approach to my time and I believe I can manage everything as long as I stay calm and take it easy. So, yeah, I don't make big plans for my day.

My Personal Answer:

Actually, I try to maintain a strict schedule. I don't make alarms or use calendars so far, but I do have everything strictly planned in my head. I try to allocate specific time for specific activities like for example If I go to the gym It should be no more than 2 hours or If I had fun playing video games, It should be no more than two or three hours a day. Having this little timing in my head allows me to have a structure in my day, although I am flexible to change the timing when needed.

Is it easy to manage time for you?

Answer 1:

If it's difficult for you.

Well, it's actually quite difficult. I don't know why, but I always end up being late. At times I don't have enough hours in the day to finish all my work, and that stresses me out. I've tried to read about how to improve my daily regime, but it seems I can't really make reasonable changes, and so... for now, my day is a mess.

My Personal Answer:

If it's easy for you to manage it (it is for me).

As I said earlier, I'm quite good at managing my own time. It has become a habit for me to think about how to optimize my day better. I always focus on the little things, for instance, how to make a journey shorter, how to prepare a meal quicker, and so on, just to squeeze more minutes for work or other activities. I have to say that It works very well. I am able to finish everything within a day, and I never have the problem of postponing tasks for another day. It works like a charm.

My Personal Answer:

When do you find it hard to allocate time?

Answer 1:

That depends. As a student, it was really difficult to add time to my schedule, because we were generally kept busy. We had all the classes, homework, and extra curriculum activities to do during the week. It was quite overwhelming, but that's the job of a student. There was no time to add to the day, and only on weekends, I managed to do something for myself.

My Personal Answer:

To be honest, I find it quite difficult on the weekend. Yes, it’s true that it’s a weekend and I’m supposed to be free, but that’s exactly why I have a problem with it. During the week, because of work, I tend to push tasks and private business for the weekend, and so eventually my weekends get really stuffed with things to do. As I have quite a full plate during that time, I can’t allocate time for an emergency or something unexpected, as I have plenty to do already. That’s why the weekend for me is a bit chaotic.

My Personal Answer:

Do you like being busy?

Answer 1:

Well, yes and no. I’d say it's ok to be busy from time to time, but not all the time. I think we need to have a good work-life balance, which means that we should have some busy days where we work or study, and some free days where we can meet with friends and focus on our family. I believe this balance becomes more important as we grow up.

My Personal Answer:

I kind of enjoy it already. I try to manage my time very well, and try to add up tasks and activities to my day. If I have free time, I’d add extra work, some type of sports activity, a call with my family, and so on. I don't like to be absolutely free, as I lose focus on my goals. By being busy, I know that I’m growing and improving all the time and so I prefer to have my hands full.

My Personal Answer:

How can you improve your time management?

Answer 1:

I guess I could add a system or a strict schedule to my daily routine. I could add some alarms to remind me of things to do. For instance, I wish I learned how to wake up early every day, regardless if it’s a weekday or a holiday. I can try to remind myself of tasks and things I have to accomplish, and that will allow me to allocate time for those. Overall, I need to teach myself a system, so I can get a better deal out of my days.

My Personal Answer:

I believe my time management is quite good already, and I don't have to change anything about it. Working more on it would be some extreme micromanagement, and I’m against that. What I could do, is actually give myself more freedom and focus more on my physical health. That's something I’d change in a heartbeat. In terms of how I balance my time though, I’m doing pretty well at the moment and I don't need any change.
