IELTS Speaking Part 1: Morning Time

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Morning Time

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

Do you like getting up early in the morning?

Answer 1:

I really dislike getting up early in the morning. It always feels like such a struggle to pull myself out of bed and start my day. I much prefer staying up late and sleeping in, but unfortunately, my schedule often needs me to wake up early. I've learned to live with it, but it definitely doesn't make me happy.

My Personal Answer:

It depends on what "early" really means. For me, I've always considered before 7:30 to be really early, 7:30 to 8:30 reasonable, and everything beyond that seriously unreasonable and lazy. For me, the Ideal time to wake up is a few minutes before 8, and so if I had to wake up, say at 7 or 6:30, I'd feel broken

What do you usually do in the morning?

Answer 1:

I don't have a usual morning routine. Some days I wake up early and have time to make breakfast and get ready at a leisurely pace, while other days I have to rush out the door and barely have time to brush my teeth. Sometimes I go for a run or do some other sort of exercise in the morning, but that is not a consistent part of my routine.

My Personal Answer:

I have a semi-strict morning routine. I usually wake up, wash quickly and go to prepare my breakfast. You might think that this is not that special, however, you don't know a key fact about my breakfast - it has been exactly the same for over 10 years. Yes, that is true, every morning I prepare exactly the same  - a cup of coffee with a lot of milk and a big bowl of homemade yogurt with fresh fruits (kiwi, pineapple, strawberry, cherry, and so on). This has not changed since I moved out from living with my parents.

What did you do in the morning when you were little? Why?

Answer 1:

When I was little, I usually woke up to the sound of my parents getting ready for work. I'd get out of bed, brush my teeth, and get dressed for the day. Then, I would have breakfast and pack my backpack for school. My parents always made sure to give me enough time to get ready in the morning so that I wasn't rushed and could start my day off on the right foot.

My Personal Answer:

I guess I did exactly the same as most kids. I woke up or was woken up by my mom, cleaned up, and prepared for school. An interesting aspect of that was that in my country we used to go to school in shifts, so we had an early-morning shift and an afternoon shift. They used to change every month so one month I had to wake up really early, and one month I could sleep in

My Personal Answer:

Is there any difference between what you do in the morning now and what you did in the past?

Answer 1:

Well, I guess my mornings are not as strict as they used to be. In the past, my parents were very strict when it comes to waking up. They wanted to build this habit in me, and in a way, they achieved their goal. These days I wake up on my own and I don't get rushed around as in the past. It is definitely easier to wake up, I guess because of the habit my parents build for me.

My Personal Answer:

Well, as I am an adult now, I have full control of my mornings. I have made this habit of waking up around 8 every morning, and then I follow the same routine every day, making breakfast, washing up, and going to work. Of course, I am free to do whatever I want in the morning, including sleeping till the very last moment and rushing to work as quickly as possible. In the past, I was more restrained by my relatives, and now I feel quite free.

My Personal Answer:

Do you do the same things in the morning on the weekend and during workdays?

Answer 1:

As a student:

I definitely sleep in much longer on the weekend. As a student, I don't have so much time to sleep during the week, as we are overwhelmed with classes, homework, and extra-curricular activities. So I use the weekend to catch up on some sleep. I'll wake up much later on Saturday and Sunday, and that will help me to recharge my batteries

My Personal Answer:

Pretty much the same. I am really consistent with my planning, or at least I try to be. From time to time I have to work even on the weekends, so I'll follow the exact same schedule. Other times, I'll wake up the same to go to the gym. I really enjoy making the best out of my mornings as I feel the most productive earlier, rather than in the afternoon.

What is something you woudn't do in the morning?

Answer 1:

Something I really dislike is actually reading in the morning. I don't feel I can concentrate enough to read, be it a book, a textbook for school, or even articles online. I prefer to do that in the afternoon, or early evening. I prefer to keep my mornings for something more active like sports.

My Personal Answer:

Well, I have to say, I am more of a morning person, and so there are very few things I wouldn't do in the morning. Let me see... I guess I wouldn't go out and hang out with friends or people in general. I feel like the morning is my "me" time. This means that I can do anything related to me - work out, do chores, clean up, cook, run some errands, and so on. I like to finish those in the morning and then meet people in the afternoon.
