IELTS Speaking Part 1: Fishing

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Fishing

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Is fishing popular in your country?

Answer 1:

Yeah, I think it is quite popular. It used to be a sport for the middle-aged but I've started seeing some younger people doing fishing as well. It is definitely an interesting activity, although I wouldn't participate myself.

My Personal Answer:

I've definitely seen people doing it, but I wouldn't call it popular. For some it could be a means to support their family, for others, it's purely a hobby and of course, we have commercial fishing, but I guess that's not the type of fishing you are asking about. As a whole, it's a niche hobby and very few people do it, as it's time-consuming and to be honest - boring.

My Personal Answer:

Do you like fishing? Why or Why not?

Answer 1:

For a "Yes" answer:

I do actually. My dad used to take me fishing from time to time during the summer vacations, and I really enjoyed the activity. We used to wake up really early in the morning, before sunrise, and go to a nearby river, close to my countryside. There we used to try to catch some fish, but usually came back empty-handed. I enjoyed the whole experience nonetheless.

My Personal Answer:

For a "No" answer:

I'm not a big fan. I have been a few times, and during those times it was tedious and exhausting. Firstly, you have to wake really early. Then you need to prepare a lot of tools and bait for the actual fishing. And in the end, it really feels like a huge waste of time sitting and waiting for a fish to take the bait. If a person likes nature, I understand, but even then, it seems like a huge time waste for me.

Are there many places you could do fishing in your hometown?

Answer 1:

I think there are a few places. To be honest, I don't do fishing, and I don't really know where people go. We have a river crossing the city, and you can see some people doing fishing there, but I haven't seen them pulling any big fish out.

My Personal Answer:

I come from a seaside city, and so, yes, there are many places people would go fishing. Along the coastline, there are these platforms built to break large waves, and there you can see fishing enthusiasts doing their thing every day. Aside from that, there are specialized artificial ponds made specifically for fishing. Many people would go there as the ponds are filled with all sorts of fish and that guarantees catching something.

My Personal Answer:

Have you ever been to a place with lots of fish around you?

Answer 1:

For a "No" answer:

I can't really remember if I've been to a place like this. The most fishes I've seen are a few in aquariums in some restaurants. If we are talking about in nature, then the answer is probably no, as I come from a city, and there are very few places where I can see animals as a whole.

My Personal Answer:

Answer for China, as I live here at the moment:

I have. In fact, there are many small ponds and lakes around the cities here in China, filled with this huge colorful type of fish called koy fish. The fish is considered sacred, and so people would feed them and admire their vibrant colors. They are really sharp orange or yellow and as they are huge, they usually group up in hundreds and wait to be fed in different spots in a lake or a pond.

My Personal Answer:

What kind of people do fishing?

Answer 1:

Well, I've seen a lot of middle-aged men doing fishing. To be honest, that's the only type of people I've seen doing fishing. I have never seen any women go fishing and so I always assumed it's a hobby more men are interested in.

My Personal Answer:

People with a lot of free time... No seriously, going fishing is time-consuming and requires a lot of preparation. It is not as easy as it sounds. A person needs to prepare all the tools and equipment like fishing poles, fishing weights, different types of bait, and more. For this reason, I think a person needs to have quite a lot of time on his hands, like during a holiday break

Is fishing an important skill?

Answer 1:

Well, it depends. It is not an important life skill anymore, that's for sure. Most people would buy fish from the wet markets or supermarkets these days. However, as a survival skill and a hobby, it could be an interesting activity for families to do, and so I believe people could try learning, at least the basics.

My Personal Answer:

Not really. I think fishing is strictly a hobby these days, and it should not be considered important. Our society has developed and fish is delivered all around the world by big companies. There is no need for every person to know how to fish, to enjoy eating sweat water or saltwater fish. If a person is a fishing enthusiast, then he can pick that skill up and enjoy his time, but for the rest of us, we'll buy fish in the supermarkets, and that's fine.
