IELTS Speaking Part 1: Evening Time

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Evening Time

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Do you like the morning or the evening?

Answer 1:

I prefer the morning. Mornings are fresh and I feel energetic, full of motivation and ambition for the day. Later in the day, I begin to feel tired and fatigued, especially during the hot summer days. I feel the most productive and focused in the morning and early noon.

My Personal Answer:

That depends on what I want to do. For work, I definitely, without any doubt prefer the mornings, as I just woke up, full of energy and ready to create. As for leisure, it is exactly the opposite. The evening is the perfect time of the day to chill, forget the day's worries, prepare some food, and play some movies. It's the laziest time for me. That's the time I'd usually either hang out with friends or spend time playing video games, so yeah, they are both different.

What do you usually do in the evening?

Answer 1:

Different things. At times I'd study. I enjoy reviewing or finishing my homework in the evening when the environment is quieter and more relaxing. Other times, I'd enjoy some entertainment like watching TV, scrolling on my mobile phone, or even playing some online games. It is different every day.

My Personal Answer:

I have my own special routine that I'd follow every evening at home. If I stay at home, I'd usually prepare food, sit down and either watch a movie or play some video games while watching YouTube. I have three computer screens and that makes it convenient for me to play a video or even a TV series on the side and play games at the same time. I love this part of the day the most, as it's pure bliss and relaxation.

My Personal Answer:

What did you do in the evening when you were little? Why?

Answer 1:

Well, I guess I did what most kids did. I stayed with my family, had dinner with them, and then maybe watched a movie, maybe played some games with my mom, and so on. At times we would go out for a walk after dinner, and other times we would go to a restaurant with family and friends, but that was rare. We mostly stayed home.

My Personal Answer:

Well, we used to have a strong family tradition that used to annoy me a little. We needed to have a full family dinner every night at around 7:30 PM. This was usually around the time they played the night news broadcast, and so we would talk about the news or about each other's day. It was annoying because we had to sit for at least 30 minutes at the dining table and as a young person, I could finish my food in no more than 10 minutes. This meant that I had to stay for quite a while and do nothing, listening to my parents talking. Every night. Anyway, these days I do miss that activity a little.

My Personal Answer:

Are there any differences between what you do in the evening now and what you did in the past?

Answer 1:

Well, as I am a grown-up and more independent, there are a lot of differences. For one, I can eat whatever I want, rather than what my parents want. What's more, I can eat at my pace, quickly or slowly, as I wish, and I can watch a movie or a TV series while eating. In general, I have more freedom.

My Personal Answer:

Yes, as I mentioned before, my evenings were way more controlled when I was younger. Now, as I moved quite far away from my family, I have completely different experiences all day long, including evenings. I go out much more times per week than then. I eat quickly or slowly, as it's mostly up to me and my mood. I can cook whatever I want and I love, and I don't have to consider anyone's feelings about the food. My evening experience has changed for the better, but there is a little piece of me that feels nostalgic for my childhood.

What activities are usually done in the evening?

Answer 1:

*For a student.

As a student, there are very few activities outside of the home that we can do. Many of us usually end up studying late at night and then go directly to bed. From what I know, many college students would do the same, although they would have some social life as well. Many university students will hang out at night, especially during the weekend or on Friday.

My Personal Answer:

Many sorts of things. As most grownups or adults are busy with work during the day, the evening is perfectly suited for going out to meet friends, visit relatives or catch up with your loved ones. People go to restaurants, take night walks in the park, or even do exercises at night. Some hit the gym in the evening, as again that's their only available time left. And of course, those who stay home, enjoy a family dinner and then do their favorite pass time activity like watching TV, watching a movie or playing video games and reading.

Do you have any family traditions related to the evening?

Answer 1:

Well, we are an ordinary family, and therefore do as most others would do. We usually have dinner together, without being strict with the timing. Once the food is ready and everyone is back home from work, we sit together and catch up. Afterward, we might go for a walk or just stay home. It all depends on our mood, the weather outside, and so on. Nothing else in particular.

My Personal Answer:

My family was big on family dinners. In fact, they still are. Family dinners were a must every day. On top of that, this was a necessity for all the important family holidays. Because of this, I have so many memories of everyone coming together, sitting around the table, and having a long, 2-3 hour meal, with jokes, laughs, and giggles. This was by far the most traditional activity we did, and it was so important that, if someone dared to be late or be absent from these dinners, then that would cause discomfort in the family and many discussions behind his back... so yeah it was a big deal.
