IELTS Speaking Part 1: Animals and Pets

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Animals and Pets

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Have you ever had a pet before?

Answer 1:

Yes, I had and I have at the moment. In the past, I had a few hamsters, a small parrot, and a cat, but they all passed away, unfortunately. I learned that some animals live a short life and that was a little disappointing. Anyway, I have a new cat at the moment and she is just one year old. I love her so much and I’ll try to take care of her, so she can be with me for a long time.

My Personal Answer:

Yes, I do. I’ve always been fascinated with turtles and therefore I’ve had a lot of turtle pets. The best ones are the red-eared sliders, a very common turtle with red spots around its ears. I’ve had 5 or 6 of them at one time, and now one of them still lives with my parents. She is 25 years old. This is an amazing achievement. Where I live, I have four other turtles of the same type, and I hope they can live with me for at least as long.

What's your favorite animal? Why?

Answer 1:

I guess I'm more of a dog person. Cats are cute, but I prefer taking care of dogs. My family used to have a dog in the past, and it was my best friend until it passed away. I still hope to have another dog in the future, as it feels amazing having a furry best friend loving you with all his heart without asking for anything in return.

My Personal Answer:

Generally, I love all sorts of animals, but my most favorite ones are reptiles. Yes, you heard that right! I’ve always been fascinated and sort of in love with lizards, snakes, and the best ones of them all - turtles. I’ve always had pet turtles in my life and I wouldn't change them for any other animal in the world. They are the best, the cutest, the smartest reptiles, and my best friends.

Where do you prefer to keep your pet, indoors or outdoors?

Answer 1:

Well, it's a pet, and so I would like to keep it safe and well-protected at home. Indoor I can give all the care my pet needs. As I live in a big city, we don’t have any gardens or yards to bring our pets outside, so I have made a special pet house - a home for my dog in my apartment. It is awesome having pets at home, as my life becomes more lively and interesting.

My Personal Answer:

I’ve always lived in the city, and I’ve always had pets at home. It is safe, clean, and convenient for me and the pet itself. However, I wish I had a big house with a yard, and then I’d definitely have some pets outside. Not farm animals exactly, but perhaps a big dog in the yard, or even a giant turtle, you know, those desert ones that can grow huge and live 100 years. That would be fantastic!

What is the most popular animal in your country?

Answer 1:

*Answer for China, as I live here at the moment.

Well, If we are talking about the most popular wild animal, that would be the panda. The panda is a symbol of my country and we protect and treasure these lazy furry bears. They are really cute, sleep all day, and eat a ton of bamboo, once they awake. If we’re talking about pets, I guess it’ll be the same as in other countries. Cats and dogs are the most common and popular pets over here.

My Personal Answer:

I come from a small country, and we don’t have any special, country-specific animals. People chose to pet the most common animals like dogs and cats, but there are some other variants of pets that can be found. For instance, I had turtles, and even an iguana at one point. I’ve seen people petting hamsters, rats, and even rabbits, and so, yes there is a variety of pets in my country.

Are pets important in your country?

Answer 1:

I guess they are becoming more popular these days. In the past, when I was young very few kids used to take care of an animal, but now it seems that every kid has one. Not to mention that adults would pet a whole zoo if allowed. I've met people with over 5 pets, all of which are a different kind. Animals are becoming a very common part of people's lives, especially in my country at the moment.

My Personal Answer:

I believe they are. People are becoming more lonely thanks to social media and technology and so they crave for a real living interaction. Pets can, at times, replace the need for real friends, and are a great companion in our life As this trend continues into the future, I believe animals and pets will be more valuable and essential for people to cope with reality. And of course, people would spoil their pets, spending a huge amount of their income on their animal friends, rather than on real actual friends. I can't say if this is a positive or negative development, to be honest.
