IELTS Speaking Part 1: TV Programs

IELTS Speaking Part 1: TV Programs

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

What kind of TV programs do you like?

Answer 1:

In terms of TV programs that I watch...I'd say that I watch anything that is hot or popular at the moment. You know, some trending TV series or a reality show that is hot at the moment. As most of my friends talk about these, I feel I need to watch them too, so we can discuss them later together. There are some crime dramas, some sci-fi series, or some reality show competitions like The Voice.

My Personal Answer:

Oh... I used to watch so much, and I really mean soo much. When I was a teenager I used to watch all the popular TV series that were available. There were action mysteries, space adventures, comedies, you name it. One of the greatest TV series I remember and will always remember was the mystery drama Lost. For me this was the highest point that TV series managed to get to. I never liked reality TV though, and I avoided that.

Do you often watch programs on the TV or on your cellphone?

Answer 1:

I think this depends on where I am. If I'm at home, I would try to watch things on a big screen, and so I prefer the TV or the computer screen. However, if I'm taking a long bus ride or traveling somewhere, of course I'd watch things on my mobile phone. So it depends.

My Personal Answer:

I try to avoid watching stuff on my mobile phone too often. I know that these days, it's becoming more and more popular to do everything on a mobile device, like gaming and watching stuff, but for me personally, the screen is just too small. I love when I'm watching on a big screen and I even want to have my own home cinema one day. Nothing too shiny, just a projector and a comfortable armchair. For me, watching something is like an event. I like to prepare food, sit in a comfortable chair and enjoy the time fully.

Do you like watching the same kind of programs all the time?

Answer 1:

Ummm, I guess so. Of course I would watch some new programs from time to time, but in general, yes, I watch the same. Some of my favorite ones are sports programs like about football or basketball, or some reality TV programs like The Voice. I follow those all the time.

My Personal Answer:

I'd say yes and no. In terms of TV series, we live in the age of instant access, and so.. once they release the whole season of a TV show I'm interested in, I binge watch it very quickly and then never re-watch it again. I like to see new stuff all the time. However, I do watch a few comedy shows on YouTube like The Late Night Show with Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and so on. Those I follow every day, and yeah, I kind of watch them exclusively.

Do you talk with your friends about the program you watched?

Answer 1:

Oh yes of course. The shows are definitely something we have in common and we talk about them all the time. If its TV series like...hmm... Game of Thrones (which ended) we would discuss them all the time. We would talk about what happened in the last episode or even try to predict how it would end.

My Personal Answer:

It's a little difficult to say. As I watch political comedy, and often times this can lead to unhealthy discussions, I would avoid talking about those. On top of that, very few of my friends watch the same TV programs (YouTube programs) as I do. If we're talking about some hot TV series, then yes, of course. Although, to be honest, often times we watch them in different time and if I saw them earlier, then I can't spoil it, but if I haven't seen it, I'd prefer not hearing about it.

Have you watched a foreign TV program?

Answer 1:

Certainly. As these days, a lot of people use Netflix, we can see TV series or programs from all around the world. There are the most popular American TV dramas, but further there are Japanese and Korean TV series and competition programs, Indian dramas and media from many other countries world wide. I can always find something interesting out there to see.

My Personal Answer:

Of course, all the time. My country didn't have any TV entertainment industry when I was young, and so we watched a lot of foreign stuff. I remember when I was a teenager, my family used to watch a few night TV series from Italy. They were quite hot at the time. After that, came the reality shows like The Voice. These music competitions became a super hit, and they would be played all the time on TV. Later in my 20-ties, I started downloading all sorts of American TV series, and since then I've watched hundreds of different actions, sci-fi, dramas, mysteries, detective dramas and more. There is enough content to watch for a whole lifetime
