IELTS Speaking Part 1: Sports

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Sports

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

What sports did you do when you were a kid?

Answer 1:

To be honest, I wasn't so interested in sports when I was younger. In my childhood, I played what the others played. If some of my friends wanted to play football, I joined them, and if they wanted to switch to basketball, I still followed them and played. In many of our P.E. classes, we used to play these, but from time to time, we organized some team games with the whole class, which I preferred.

My Personal Answer:

My parents used to take me around for different classes. I guess, they wanted to keep me active and so they signed me to so many of these classes that I dropped after one or two months of try. I remember clearly I had basketball lessons, dancing classes, aikido - Japanese martial art - classes, private gym coach, and more. It was overwhelming for sure, but the one I enjoyed the most was swimming lessons. I took those for 3 years.

What's your favorite sport? Why?

Answer 1:

This is an easy one. I love everything about football. When I was young, my father used to watch all the important football games on TV and so I joined him all the time. We talked about the teams, the compositions, the top players in the Champion's League and the top rivalries between teams. And so now, I enjoy doing the same - sit comfortably, get a few drinks and snacks and watch the game with friends or by myself.

My Personal Answer:

I'd have to say that it depends. For leisure I would definitely choose swimming. For me, there is nothing better than entering the cool waters of a swimming pool or the sea and diving or swimming around. It would make me feel calm and peaceful. Now, if it's for working out and losing weight, I think the best one is just hitting the gym. There I can focus on many different body exercises and target the muscles I want like chest, arms, legs or back. So, It definitely depends.

Do you watch sports matches? Why?

Answer 1:

Yes I do. I try to keep up with the latest games of the most important sports. I enjoy watching football and the Champion's League. Every time when it's a year for the World Cup, I'd follow the games passionately. What's more, I would join some friends if they watch an important basketball game, or a volleyball game or even a big tennis tournament

My Personal Answer:

As of now, I would say no. I used to follow some sports  like Formula 1 racing (I'm not sure if this is a sport...), when I was younger, mainly because of my father and some friends, but in general I'm not a sports fan and I don't have any particular love for sports. I would watch some games from the World Cup... But to be honest, I wont root for any team. Whoever wins, I feel happy for them and then I move on.

Are you a fan of any sports team? Why?

Answer 1:

I was back in the days. I come from Europe, and because of this we have this rivalry between teams and countries. I was a big fan of Real Madrid, during Ronaldo's time. Not Cristiano Ronaldo, but the dream team with Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane and more. Those were the days... It was a spectacular show to watch.

My Personal Answer:

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of any team. I never had this strong feeling for sports or being a huge fan of some superstar player. Personally, I think they are extremely overpaid and unnecessary famous. I mean, in our society, we don't respect doctors or firefighters, who literally save lives every day... but people chasing balls... yeah give them millions and millions of dollars a month. I never understood this aspect of our society to be honest.
