IELTS Speaking Part 1: Primary School

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Primary School

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

What did you like to do the most when you were in primary school?

Answer 1:

Oh... this was long time ago...let me see... I used to take the normal classes as everyone else, of course, and then what I liked to do the most was having P.E. classes. I felt those were like a break from the other tough lessons, as they mostly left us to play football or basketball

My Personal Answer:

Ok, this is was really funny... In primary school my favorite time was the breaks between the classes. Me and some friends realized that many kids like to play outside in the school yard during the break, and they would drop a lot of their lunch coin. We used to follow many of the kids around and collect their coin after them. Later, after school, we used to buy snacks with the collected coin. That was awesome!

How did you go to your primary school?

Answer 1:

My grandparents used to take me and pick me up. My parents were quite busy with their work, and my grandma or grandpa used to take care of me quite a lot during that time. The school was not that far, and it took us about 15 minutes to walk back.

My Personal Answer:

I used to walk, every time. My primary school was in the same neighborhood, and it took me just 5 minutes by foot. I believe at first, in grade 1 and 2, some of my relatives like grandparents or my mom would take me to school, but later in year 3 I learned to go all by myself. At that time, we had very little traffic, as cars were not that common, and so it was relatively safe for me to go.

How did you like your primary school?

Answer 1:

I don't have a very clear memory about it, but I guess I enjoyed it a lot. I was too young at the time, and I didn't have any strong opinion about school. I just woke up in the morning and went to have classes and chat with my new classmates. Times were simple back then.

My Personal Answer:

I liked the place mainly because of its public playground. The school was open for anyone to come during the weekend or even during class time and play on the football field or shoot at the basketball court. At that time, we used to hang out with some neighborhood friends, and we always went to my primary school to play some games. We spent so much time on that playground, that at times our parents were worried about us. This is one great memory that I still keep in my mind to this day.

What did you dislike about your primary school?

Answer 1:

Well, I guess it would have to be that we didn't have a school canteen, and so we had to get back home for lunch, or pack a lunch box with us. Nowadays, it's more common for primary schools to have their own lunch area, but in my time, this was almost unheard of. It was definitely annoying, having to go back home for a little bit and then going back to school again.

My Personal Answer:

Well, I suppose I disliked some teachers... But to be honest, I can't remember clearly anymore. Something else that bothered me was that I used to have a few kindergarten friends. We were quite close, and we began studying in the same primary school. I even remember our parents talking about it and trying to arrange it, so we could be in the same school and same class. Well, after grade 2 something happened and some of them had to leave, or change their school. It was definitely heartbreaking to lose a few friends this way.

What did you do in your leisure time in your primary school?

Answer 1:

We mostly played. I didn't need any extra classes after school, as I had no issues with the subjects, and so I had a lot of time to spend after class. At times I stayed in school and played some games with a few classmates for an hour or two, and in other occasions I enjoyed some of my hobbies like watching movie tapes or swimming

My Personal Answer:

Primary school... Hmm, that was really long time ago. I think I did almost the same as anyone else in my age. We didn't have so much homework, and so we could enjoy a lot of leisure time on our own, or with friends. I used to have a few neighborhood friends back then and we used to roam around the neighborhood, played some games like hide and seek, collected sticks and stones or played some collectible card or toy games. Now when I think about it, It was an amazing time and I feel a little nostalgic.
