IELTS Speaking Part 1: Festivals

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Festivals

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

How do you celebrate festivals in your country?

Answer 1:

I guess we celebrate our festivals the same as other countries. Many of our festivals are family-related, especially the more traditional ones like Easter. A family gathering is a must on those special occasions, and so we gather in a restaurant or at home. What's more, for every festival we will prepare special seasonal food and some small gifts to exchange with our relatives. That's what usually happens.

My Personal Answer:

Our festivals can be two types - family-related and ones we meet with friends. If we take a family-related festival like Christmas, we have to respect our elderly, and so we gather for a long lunch or dinner on Christmas day. Now, if we take the New Year celebration, we almost exclusively go out with our friends. What usually happens is we book a restaurant with a set menu, live music performance, and games with rewards. It is always a great time, and we usually stay very late that night, until early morning.

What special food and activities do you have for these festivals?

Answer 1:

Alright, so let's take Valentine's Day. This is a well-known festival of love. Young couples will buy flowers like red roses - a symbol of love, chocolate boxes (usually shaped as heart), and book a diner table in a fancy restaurant. As for adults, they might do the same as the young, or they might prepare something more unique at home. A great idea is a candle-lit dinner at home with a bottle of wine and a fancy home-cooked meal

My Personal Answer:

I'll tell you about Christmas. Every year, this is one of the festivals I can't wait for, as most of the time I think of the delicious, mouthwatering food. We will prepare a huge dinner table, with some key dishes like turkey filled with potatoes or rice, mashed potatoes or other special potato salads, normal vegetable salads, caviar, pickles, home-baked bread, and different types of sauce. Even thinking about it makes me hungry at this moment.

How do you celebrate your New Year Festival?

Answer 1:

* For China (it's a little different from the rest of the world)

In my country, the New Year is also called Spring Festival, and it's different from the international New Year. It is in the end of January or the middle of February (based on the Lunar Calendar) and is a huge family gathering tradition. We celebrate together with our close family members at home. We usually prepare some festive food like dumplings, different types of pork and chicken meals, fish and more. This celebration can take a few days and we fire a lot of firecrackers to celebrate the beginning of the Lunar Year.

My Personal Answer:

The New Year is a time for friends. We gather our best friends and we either organize a party at someone's home, or we book a restaurant. The restaurant usually has a special festive program where they invite guest singers, play entertaining games, and serve special meals. Everybody gets to drink champagne when the clock ticks to 12, and we cheer, sing, and dance all over the place. It's a real celebration, as seen in the movies. Oh, and don't forget fireworks, we shoot a lot of fireworks.

What is your favorite festival?

Answer 1:

That has to be Christmas. I just love the atmosphere and I have so many beautiful memories from that festival, especially from when I was a kid. We always used to get together with my family, uncles, aunts, and grandparents, and further, we always exchanged wrapped gifts with the other kids, and even with the adults. It is such a wonderful time!

My Personal Answer:

Personally, as I grew up, I stopped paying attention to festivals that much. If I had to choose one that I always enjoy, it would have to be New Year. Even though I'm not superstitious, I always make a wish on New Year's Eve for a better year ahead. Most of the time, those wishes don't really come true, but life is a struggle, and so I always have something to look forward to, once I make that resolution. In a way, I feel this kind of mysterious feeling about the New Year that's coming, and I wonder what new, exciting thing will come into my life, in the year ahead.

Do you celebrate any foreign festivals?

Answer 1:

* Foreign festivals are different depending on the country you come from.

Sometimes. I'm not a huge fan of traditional festivals, however, there are some international celebrations that are quite fun. For example, Halloween. That's an awesome celebration because we don't celebrate something traditional, but instead, we can organize a costume/cosplay party. There are very few occasions when we can put on a costume, and I think it's an awesome opportunity to show off our creativity and have fun

My Personal Answer:

*I live in China at the time I write this.

As I live in China at the moment, I celebrate a lot of the local festivals. For instance, I celebrate Mid-Autumn festival, by going out for dinner and exchanging mooncakes with some of my friends. Another one I'd celebrate... no actually just participate in is the digital festival 11/11 or Single's Day. Now this is not a real festival, but instead, it's a made-up online event for huge shopping discounts. Basically, it's like Black Friday in the US. This is always fun because I can buy a lot of products online at a huge discount, and that saves me money.
