IELTS Speaking Part 1: Dreams

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Can you remember the dreams you had?

Answer 1:

Occasionally. At times, my dreams get so messy that I forget them the moment I wake up. I'd remember dreaming about familiar places or familiar people like relatives, but if it was some fairytale, I'd probably forget it instantly.

My Personal Answer:

I remember some, and that's usually the nightmares. I'd say that nightmares create this emotional response where I wake up in the middle of the night shaking or even at times screaming, and that's definitely something I remember for quite a while. One of my most common nightmares is that I'm simply falling down and then suddenly I hit the bottom floor. At that very moment, I instantly wake up.

Do you share your dreams with others? (or are you interested in others' dreams)

Answer 1:

I think I'd keep the scary ones, like nightmares, or the weird ones to myself. I would share the magical ones. Every now and then I would dream of some fantasy story that I participate in, and I can't wait to tell that to my parents or to some of my friends. These are always interesting to have a chat about.

My Personal Answer:

Rarely, although I would share a dream if it involves a very close person. I would meet that person and say "You know what happened?", or "You can't guess what I dreamed about you!". On a serious note, I would share the funny and fascinating dreams that I have, and I'll keep the weird ones for myself. Sometimes, even I can't understand the content of the dream and I wouldn't confuse others with it.

Do you think dreams have special meanings?

Answer 1:

I used to believe that when I was younger, and even now I have some second thoughts about it. I used to have a few books on dreams and their meanings, but same as astrology, at some point (especially when nothing came true) I started doubting my dreams and maybe began to realize they are simply random, without any meaning.

My Personal Answer:

From what I understand, it seems that dreams are our brain, reacting to some hyper-emotions brought in our life. It could be an epic movie we've seen lately, or it could be the passing of a relative. Regardless, the meaning is related to us experiencing some type of positive or negative shock in our life, and then that manifests itself in the form of dreams. No, I don't believe we can see the future through dreams.

Do you want to make your dreams come true?

Answer 1:

Speaking of the ones I dream of while sleeping, I would like to see some of them come true for sure. Sometimes I'd dream about having long vacations in a paradise island, or a faraway country. That's the type of dream I'd like to come true. For the rest, I'd say no. It's better if those remain imagination.

My Personal Answer:

Well, this has a double meaning. If we're talking about my "dreams" as my hopes and aims for life, I'd definitely want to make them happen at some pointHowever, If we talk about the dreams I dreamt about, I'd say no. The reason is that most of the time my dreams are not realistic. Often times they are about some fairytale and magic and if they're nightmares, they are about monsters chasing me or me falling through the sky. That's definitely not something I want to experience, and so I prefer if these remained in the realm of my dreams.

My Personal Answer:

What kinds of dreams do you often have?

Answer 1:

As I mentioned a little before, I've dreamed of traveling to some exotic locations. What else is there... Hmm. I remember dreaming of some fairytales that I participate in or I see in first-person view. It was sort of like a VR game I could interact with. Really awesome experience. I'd like to have those dreams more often, to be honest.

My Personal Answer:

I believe it's 3 to 1 when it comes to nightmares against normal dreams.  I've had much more nightmares lately than ordinary dreams with a happy endings. I believe stress in life affects our dreams, and the more stress we have the more we end up dreaming of some murder or a monster chasing us. I've had a recent dream about a ghost hanging at the door, near the bathroom. That was not pleasant at all. In terms of positive, I've dreamed about my relatives, hanging out with them, and meeting them, as I live far from them at the moment.
