IELTS Speaking Part 1: Colors

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Colors

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

What is your favorite color?

Answer 1:

My favorite color is the color blue. In particular, I like light blue, the one of the sky when it's clear and bright. I like it because it makes me feel peaceful when I look at it. It is the opposite of dark, cloudy skies and that makes me calm and relaxed. I like clothes in light blue as well. They suit me well.

My Personal Answer:

Well, my favorite color is black. I like it mostly for backgrounds, wallpapers on my desktop, and of course for clothes and shoes. Black slims down people and makes them look more clean and elegant. Many suits and formal clothes are in dark or black colors, and that is attractive to me. What's more, I like to buy gadgets, furniture, and other accessories in black.

My Personal Answer:

What's the color you dislike? Why?

Answer 1:

The color I dislike has to be white. It's funny because I actually like it, but I dislike being extra careful when wearing white clothes or shoes, as they can get stains from anything. This creates pressure in my mind, always worrying if I have something dirty on my white shirt or if I stepped in something with my white shoes. And so, I stopped wearing it altogether.

My Personal Answer:

I dislike the color green. Not every green, but the bright green color of freshly cut grass or other plants. I know it sounds weird, but I find it repulsive and in fact, it makes me sick. Sometimes if I'm driving along a field of green, I get dizzy and feel like vomiting out of the blue. So I avoid surrounding myself with too much green.

Do colors have any meanings? What are they?

Answer 1:

* For China, as I live there at the moment.

I've heard of a few related to superstitions. For example in China, you mustn't give white flowers, as they are considered to be for funerals. Of course, the younger generations do not follow these traditions strictly anymore. Another one is a funny one, the color green for a hat is a no-no, as it means that your wife is having an affair. These are some interesting ones.

My Personal Answer:

There are some internationally recognized meanings like black and white, being opposites, and pure colors, symbolizing pureness and cleanness. They are quite popular in fashion and make people look generally slimmer and stylish. Other ones are the colors blue and pink, usually designated for young boys and girls respectively. And then there is the color red, which is a symbol of love and relationship.

What are your countys' colors? What is their meaning?

Answer 1:

*For China as I live here at the moment.

Our national color is the color red. It is related to our national flag and the identity of our government. The color red is a symbol of luck, happiness, and joy. Around Chinese New Year you can buy many souvenirs and trinkets in the color red, such as key chains, wall decorations, traditional Chinese wishes, underwear, socks, and red pockets for gifting money. It is very popular.

My Personal Answer:

In my country Bulgaria, we have three national colors on our flag. They are the colors white, green, and red. White is an international symbol of peace and freedom, and we have the same meaning. Green is a symbol of the green, natural environment in the country. My country has a beautifully clean, pollution-free nature, and that is represented in the color green. And lastly,  the color red is a symbol of courage and strength

Are colors important for fashion?

Answer 1:

Oh yes, they are. Some people are obsessed with being fashionable and following fashion trends, and they care a lot about colors and matching colors with their outfits. From the color of their bag, shoes, pants, and t-shirt, to the little accessories like earrings for women, everything can match. For example, black and white match naturally and slim down a person, so they are a great way to look stylish and fashionable.

My Personal Answer:

Yes, they are. Colors can represent trends in fashion. For instance one of the trends in the last few years was large oversized sports brands like Nike, Adidas, and Fila, full black base with a large brand logo in white on top. This trend attracted a lot of young people to purchase those clothes and even made some brands run out of stock. It is quite effective and brands know how to manipulate their customers with colors.
