IELTS Speaking Part 1: Cinemas

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Cinemas

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Did you usually go to the cinema when you were a kid?

Answer 1:

I did. Actually, we went to the movie theater when that was still a thing. We used to have these theaters, and as a child, I couldn't wait to go and see the newest movies, be it a new Disney animation or a movie as serious as Aliens. It was a great time.

My Personal Answer:

Yes of course. It was an activity I'd do with my sister and my mom, and after a while, we still kept this tradition with my sister going. Movies have changed in the last ten or fifteen years, but back then, going to the movie theater was the only venue where we could watch a real new blockbuster, so we went for every premier available. I remember seeing so many famous first screenings like The Lord of The Rings, Terminator, or some Pixar cartoons like Monster Inc.

Do you usually go to the cinema with your friends?

Answer 1:

Yes, we do. This is one of our favorite activities. In fact, we go to the cinema quite often. What we usually do is go to the closest shopping mall, find something delicious to eat, and then buy our tickets for the latest movie premier. That's always a recipe for a great time.

My Personal Answer:

Hmm, I used to, before moving far away from my friends. As I grew up, and everyone went to chase their own dreams and success, I see my friends less and less. These days, if we meet, we'd rarely if not ever go to the cinema together. A better way is mainly to hang out and talk about our lives, have a few drinks together or eat a nice meal somewhere. Life changes as you grow older.

Do you still enjoy watching the movies you loved as a child?

Answer 1:

Oh yes, of course. Oftentimes I feel nostalgic, and I stream or watch a movie on my PC from the past. At times I watch a romantic comedy from the 90s. Other times I revisit some action-packed blockbuster or even a Disney animation from the past. In general, I have some movie franchises I'd rewatch every now and then like the Harry Potter series, The Pirates Of The Caribbean, or some of the superhero movies from the recent past.

My Personal Answer:

Sometimes. Movies and technology have changed a lot since my childhood and some movies I can tolerate and rewatch, however some I find really boring and just old. Acting and story were way better in the past and movies had a deeper meaning. This is something I completely agree with, but as I'm already sort of used to the spectacle of the IMAX cinema, I can't make myself watch something older, with lower graphics and lower special effects. It's just different.

Do you prefer watching movies at home or at the cinema?

Answer 1:

That would depend on the movie itself. If it's one of those big-budget Marvel superhero blockbusters, I believe there is only one way to watch these, and that is at the theater. However, if we're talking about a comedy or a romantic movie, these don't really need to be seen in a movie theater, and I'd wait to see them at home.

My Personal Answer:

I used to go to every movie premier in the past. It was like a hobby or as a pass-time activity for me, and I've seen literally every movie in the late 90s and early 2000s. After a while though, be it because I started growing up or because I found the new era of Hollywood movies way too repetitive, tired, forgettable, somewhat tedious, trying to lecture the viewer and push some kind of agenda, I stopped going so often. Nowadays, during and after the pandemic, my will to go and see a movie has literally diminished. The same goes for watching at home. I'd still watch a movie, but probably once or twice a year

What are the benefits of going to the cinema?

Answer 1:

The benefits are many. One of them is that we can watch the latest movie release at the cinema. When a movie is released, it won't be uploaded online (at least in the first week or so), and the only way we can see it is at the theater. Another one is the atmosphere. Buying popcorn, a drink, being surrounded by people all waiting in anticipation for the action, it is a fantastic atmosphere for sure.

My Personal Answer:

For me, it would be the huge screen, the special effects, and the crystal clear surround sound. Modern movies are a spectacle to be seen and that requires a huge screen and 3D technology. I love going to an IMAX screening of a latest blockbuster movie. That's simply breathtaking. When the movie is on the IMAX screen, you can see all the amazing special effects put into the movie, and in a way, you can enter the world of the movie itself.
