IELTS Speaking Part 1: Advertisements

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Advertisements

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. Again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer.

Talk about yourself. This part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person).

So, lets take a look at some questions:

What kinds of advertisements do you watch?

Answer 1:

These days there are so many of these commercials everywhere I click. I have seen car commercials with some of those top brands like BMW, Mercedes Benz and Tesla, advertising their latest model. Other ones are definitely fast food commercials - McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, you name it... they are everywhere online and all around the cities on billboards and bus stops.

My Personal Answer:

Honestly, I avoid them as the plague. For me there is nothing more annoying and even infuriating, than some ad interrupting my video or even my gaming time. That's why I use Adblocker and other software to block all these advertisements. Unfortunately, this doesn't work 100% of the time, and every now and then I'll see some ads related to gaming and new video games or some daily products. As you know, ads are based on what you browse... and so they will be related to my life in some way.

Where can you see advertisements?

Answer 1:

Well, I see them everywhere I go, or in everything I enjoy. For example, I see them on the bus stops, while I wait for the bus. The bus itself is usually covered with some advertisement, and further inside the bus there are two or three screens playing some types of ads. Every time I look at my mobile phone, I will see some ads, while I read an article or browse the internet. They are literally everywhere, but I've learned to ignore them.

My Personal Answer:

Lately ads got smarter. Apart from the regular ads we see everywhere on our mobile devices, or around us in the cities, there are new types of ads appearing, and sometimes people don't even realize this. For example there is product placement in movies, where the character drinks Coke or holds an iPhone in his hand. There are ads within popular songs - people rapping about Gucci or Prada for instance. There is a push to bring real life ads into video games and even into VR video games. It is getting out of hand to be honest...

Have you ever bought something because of its advertisement?

Answer 1:

I guess so. As we are surrounded with commercials and advertisements everywhere, I'm sure I've bought something without even realizing. One example would simply be McDonalds. Every time I see their newest burger or promotion on a billboard or a bus stop, I get a feeling that I want to try it and eventually I go and buy it. Another one would be for a new deodorant. Those ads always look so fresh and cool that I end up buying a new deodorant (only when I need one, of course).

My Personal Answer:

I try to avoid this as much as I can, but I have to admit that they catch me from time to time. For example, as I'm fan of Samsung, I would buy some of their newest smartphones. I definitely bought two or three phones this way, over time. Another Samsung product I purchased was their wireless earbuds. This was and still is one of the best purchases I've ever bought from an advertisement to this day. It was absolutely worth it and made my life so much easier. So, there could be a good outcome from these ads

Do you watch advertisements from the beginning to the end?

Answer 1:

Not if I have a choice. If it's on TV, I can't really skip it, and then I watch the whole advertisement, or I look at my phone for a while. If it's something that interests me, like an entertaining mobile game or a cool looking product, then I'd watch the whole piece

My Personal Answer:

For me personally, advertisements are such a turn off, that I would turn off the TV channel until the ads are gone. If we're talking about YouTube, I skip the ads instantly. The moment the speakers start to promote their product I skip 3-4 minutes further, until they resume their normal speech. If a channel plugs in too many ads or stops his speech all the time to promote stuff, I would literally unsubscribe or ignore it. I did not follow those people to be sold things all the time, no thanks !

How do you feel about advertisements?

Answer 1:

Obviously, I don't like to look at advertisements all the time. However, I do feel that they are useful sometimes. There are many new types of products, for example for house cleaning. If you don't look at advertisements, you don't even know that they exist. So, I believe ads can be useful, sometimes, as long as they're not above 10% of the whole content*.

*content can mean - article, video, TV series, a review, a guide, and so on.

My Personal Answer:

From my previous answers you can already feel what I think about advertising. I sincerely hate them, and I wish advertising was regulated to the ground. What I mean is that governments, in general, leave advertisers to do whatever they want, as long as they follow some shallow regulations. It seems that there is no regulation on time of advertising and how many per hour can be played. And don't get me started on the internet... That has turned into one huge advertisement, where people do anything they can to promote their product or even personal brand. It is off-putting
